BEIJING, Jan. 12 /Micro News/ -- Chinese read a lot online but traditional bookstores are still going strong. The total number of brick-and-mortar bookstores in China exceeded 70,000 in 2019, according to figures released at the China Bookstore Conference.
In 2019, China added more than 3,000 new bookstores across the country, cities such as Chengdu, Nanjing, Shenyang, Xi'an and Chongqing have the most bookstores.
While many bookstores are open inside university campuses, people also love visiting bookstores regularly outside of campus to check on new books and shop gifts. Bookstores in China sell not only books, but also innovative stationery, souvenirs and daily utensils, and they are actually more like lifestyle stores.
Big book malls continue to develop in 2019, and China currently has 135 book malls covering more than 5,000 square meters each, of which 35 are over 10,000 square meters.
